May 21, 2019 Update:
AXCS is still accepting preliminary reservations from current members for the MWC2020 trip. We have had a great deal of interest (65+ early reservations of 1-6 people each thus far). That's great news -- but it does mean we are now getting very lean on room availability out of our first round of allocations from the organizers.

It is absolutely important that if you want "in" on this trip, you need to act quickly to get your name on the preliminary list. See how to join the trip by scrolling to the bottom of this page.

If we do book up 100% of our space, AXCS will ask for more space plus it is highly likely that some folks in ahead of you will change their plans. So do not freak out if you hear initially that space is filled up or that certain hotels are currently filled. Things will change.

If you do submit a preliminary reservation request in the near future, make certain to give AXCS a ranking of your 3 top lodging choices. At least one of the options needs to be open (see hotel list below) when you submit your request otherwise we cannot add you to the trip. But you can also list options that are currently closed as preferences. On your preferences, please be very specific as to room type in any given hotel. If you are open to sharing larger rooms or suites with other skiers, that information is also essential. Pricing and general USA hotel information is below the preview promotional text that matches exactly the text that is in the AXCS Spring Digest print issue. Viva Italia everyone!

The Scoop On MWC2020

This year the Worlds returns to Italy. The 2006 AXCS trip to Brunson and the 2013 AXCS trip to Asiago (both with well over 100 USA racers) proved just how fun and inviting it is to race and vacation in the Italian theme park of XC skiing and tourist attractions. Cogne MWC2020 is just going to be more of the same awesomeness.

The jaw-dropping scenery, incredible food, wine, a couple thousand years of living history everywhere you turn -- the list is pretty much endless. Let’s just say there is a reason why every year thousands of Norwegians make an annual trek from the cradle of skiing to experience the January Worldloppet in this part of the XC world. The Italians just know how to combine great skiing and a great time into a beautiful package.

The village of Cogne serves as a gateway to the magnificent Gran Paradiso National Park - created in 1922 when King Victor Emmanuel III of Savoy donated his legendary game reserve to the nation. As Italy’s oldest national park, the Gran Paradiso is home to hundreds of protected species of animals and extremely rare plants and flowers all of which coexist in this protected area in one of the most beautiful areas of the Alps.

Located at an elevation of 1544m /5,000 feet, Cogne has an modern advantage over many other Nordic venues in the Alps of having enough altitude to help provide a reassurance of snow — along with a modern snowmaking system. The venue regularly plays host to XC ski competitions including the February 2019 World Cup sprint race won by no other than USA skier Jessie Diggins.

Situated immediately adjacent to the L-shaped main village area, the Cogne race venue is predominately located on a several square kilometer triangle of sloping grass meadow/pasture called the Prati di Sant’Orso (literally translated Meadows of Sant’Orso). With the village bordering the grass fields on two sides, a waterfall-filled river borders the third side. Ski trails criss-cross the grass triangle with additional terrain provided up and down the river drainage including many kilometers of staircase trails leading up to the threshold of the Gran Paradiso Park itself.

Shade from surrounding steeply-sloped ridge lines provides a perfect winter snow protection for the wide open Sant’Orso trails — and those same ridges also reduce wind exposure on stormy days. Needless to say, these are going to be great spectating trails. In addition to the world-class race courses at the competition venue, there are other nearby trails offering a total of 80km of skiing on 12 different routes.

With numerous shops and eating options in the main village and a handful of surrounding smaller micro-villages located in the four valleys that splinter out from Cogne itself, we are talking about a quintessential winter Alps ski vacation venue. A small selection of alpine ski lifts offers gravity fun for so those inclined with additional winter vacation amenities available for skiers and non-skiers alike to enjoy.

Although Cogne itself would be enough for many, an undeniably big part of the draw with this MWC trip is how amazing day trip destinations are a short drive away.

It takes less than a half hour to drop down from Cogne to the floor of the Aosta Valley and there you’ll find the adult theme park comparison perfectly apt. Whether you enjoy exploring historical locations (castles, Roman ruins, you name it) — wine tasting at local vineyards — shopping/dining in Aosta itself — let’s just say there’s several weeks of stuff to do and see.

Go a little bit further and your options really open up.

Both the Italian and French gateways to Mont Blanc — Courmayeur, ITA and Chamonix, FRA — are 60-75 minutes away to the west (largely by freeway). The Skyway cable car from Courmayeur takes you to two stations up the south side of Mont Blanc — the highest at 3,466m (11,400 feet). On a clear day you will enjoy incredible wintertime vistas over three countries worth of the Alps.

For those that joined AXCS for the 2006 trip to Brusson, the amazing Nordic trails and alpine thrills plus vistas of the Italian side of the Matterhorn offered by that resort area are just 80 minutes door-to-door to the east.

Bottom line on this trip is that it’s a great one for non-racing friends/family — the skiing is going to be great — the village a delight — and the day trip options without parallel. Viva Italia 2020!

Are there any add-on's for this trip?
Originally AXCS thought that the Engadin Ski Marathon would take place after the MWC2019 -- but in fact the ESM is going to happen on Sunday, March 7 so it'll be in the middle of the MWC. It's possible for a skier to have their MWC cake and ESM too, but it will take some back-to-back racing and some tricky logistics probably with a rental car. AXCS is going to look into possible Euro Loppet events the weekend of March 14-15, 2020 and we'll let you know if we spot something cool. For some skiers, the most attractive add-on is probably to arrange storage of your ski gear (Milan being a good option) and going for an add-on trip to southern Italy or France for a little early spring break action.

AXCS Travel Package Information

Hotels: For the MWC2020 Trip, AXCS has arranged hotel or suite reservations at six different Cogne hotels. All of these reservations are set up to include daily half board meal packages (breakfast/dinner). All AXCS hotels are within a 100-500m walk of the MWC2020 stadium on the Prati di Sant’Orso and all have easy walking access to all village attractions including the recreation center that will be used for awards and social events.

Important Hotel Note #1: Because of the unique design of most hotels in Cogne, all the hotels have a range of room prices depending on the unique style and amenities of each room. AXCS now has a detailed list of our allocated rooms (see below). The association is currently in the process of assigning rooms to skiers on the preliminary reservation list.

Important Hotel Note #2: AXCS has confirmed that single room prices for this trip have been confirmed to be at premium level in most of our hotels (see below). Remember that it is also possible to configure suites or apartments for single rooms if you combine with other single USA skiers. It's also possible to do independent on-line searches for single spaces in homes or apartments that may be cheaper (be wary of additional ground transportation demands however).

Apartments: The MWC2020 OC has a very limited supply of official apartment options. There are additional private bookings that can be made via the normal on-line rental websites, but the organizers cannot guarantee pricing, terms, or quality. If you are interested in an apartment, what AXCS suggests is that you submit a request to the AXCS Office as soon as possible via email with as much detail about what you ideally want (example: 3 bedroom apartment with sleeping space for 5 people, 2 rooms with double beds and 1 room with a single bed). The AXCS Office will then submit your request to the OC Lodging Coordinator. While we wait for an OC reply, you then can (and should) look around at on-line rental websites to see if you can find any options via that route. Once there are comparable options from the OC and your web search, you can make a decision and the booking can move forward either way. If you elect to go with a private rental website, you'll handle the transaction entirely on your own. Also, anyone with independent lodging that registers for the MWC2020 will be requested to contribute a "fair share" AXCS-MWC donation of $75 to help offset AXCS non-profit association costs attached to the annual Worlds representation and organization.

I Want To Sign Up For The MWC2020 Trip -- What Do I Do?

Step #1.) AXCS is immediately accepting preliminary trip reservations for the MWC2020 AXCS lodging packages. Email or call the AXCS Office to get your name on the first-come, first-served reservation chart -- jd at xcskiworld dot com or 541-317-0217

Note: When you call or email, mention if you want a single or double room. If you do not yet have a roommate in a 2 bed double but want to share a room, let AXCS know so we can keep an eye out for a roommate. Also, AXCS anticipates high demand for this trip and we have a limited supply of rooms at each type of hotel -- so please send your 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choices on hotels so that we can save time if some choices fill quickly. Please remember that preliminary reservations are just that -- preliminary -- so even when we fill some types of hotels/rooms early on, often options open up as the year goes along. Don't panic, we'll figure it out :-).

Step #2.) To maintain a spot on the preliminary reservation list, latest by June 10 you will need to submit a $600US deposit (per person) payable to AXCS. See how to pay and terms on this page...
https://xcskiworld.com/mwc2020-trip-deposit-payment
Final balance payment will be due in late fall 2019. AXCS will announce the exact final balance due date by September and send individual “invoices” for each booking once we can get a firm handle on exchange rates and other trip costs.

Step #3.) Email or call Diana Lynn Rau (The Travel Society) at 866.759.6867 -or- 970.887.3095 or Email: Dianalrau@cs.com to get a search going for your best airfares. Yes, absolutely you can do your own air booking -- but AXCS recommends at least pricing things with Diana especially for this trip because you can save hundreds of dollars vs. typical on-line pricing on flights in/out of Milan using travel agent fares only Diana can source.

Step #4.) Make sure your AXCS membership is current for 2019/20. All room bookings with the AXCS package require at least current one membership -- and everyone racing under the USA flag must be a current member.

Step #5.) Talk to your ski buddies and urge them to go. MWC trips are a blast with friends and we always want the biggest contingent possible. This particular trip is going to be really fun for non-competing skiers so don’t be shy about talking up the MWC trip to friends that would just enjoy the great skiing, great organization by AXCS, and camaderie of a fun group of fellow USA masters!
